Directed by Zareena Grewal, this documentary follows the powerful transformation of Chris Jackson, an NBA player who embraced Islam and changed his name to Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, navigating the challenges that came with his faith.

We believe this intimate yet uncompromising film is a compelling way to introduce @oltreoceano.eu’s new issue, “One Nation Under God: Islam, Identity, and Resistance in the Black America”.

Each screening will be accompanied by an open discussion, turning the film into a space for collective reflection.

Legacy Work: A conversation with James Demby in dialogue with Justin Randolph Thompson in collaboration with The Recovery Plan as an extension of Black Archive Alliance.

This conversation is with James Demby, son of the writer, journalist and collector William Demby, subject of the exhibition Tremendous Mobility curated by BHMF and on view through May of 2025 at Murate Art District. The intimate exchange is designed to reflect upon oral history in relation to archival trades, the meaning of annotation in relation to historical narration and the significance of legacy maintenance as a gesture of care for future generations. Justin Randolph Thompson Co-founder and director of Black History Month Florence and The Recovery Plan and part of the curatorial collective BHMF discusses this and more in relation to the layered and complex history of William Demby.

Dopo quasi settant’anni di evoluzione, come si possono ripensare il diritto e le istituzioni giuridiche dell’UE per affrontare il problema dell’uguaglianza duratura in modo sostenibile? After almost seven decades of evolution, how can EU law and EU legal institutions be reimagined to tackle the problem of enduring equality in a way that is sustainable? What is the process by which this can take place, and what values should inform this process? In this talk, Prof. Iyiola Solanke will suggest that this process needs to prioritise de-colonisation and promote both cognitive justice and conviviality as core values to create democratic institutions capable of promoting long term social justice. Building on Professor Solanke’s lecture, Nozizwe Dubwe will provide a critical response, reflecting on how these ideas intersect with her own research on structural inequality and discrimination in EU equality law. Her insights will further illuminate the pathways for reimagining EU law and institutions to create a more inclusive legal order for Europe and the global constituencies it impacts.

"Salone Titi" is a space dedicated to bodies and aesthetic practices, with the intention of returning historical and cultural values related to them. The talk will introduce the history and customs of ancient arts such as tattoos, piercings and tooth gems, which have roots in various Indigenous traditions, African and otherwise. Arianna Campana, also known as Ary body art, is a piercer and costume history teacher based in Florence. “Salone Titi” format was created in collaboration with Carmela Iziegbe, founder of the brand Aku Body Jewelry, which makes body accessories. Through the identity of the brand, her craft creations are an opportunity to discover and deepen the history of the Benin Kingdom, nowadays Edo State, Nigeria. After the talk, the open studio remains accessible for on-site consultations and services.

A Sanctuary of Trees è un video trittico di Phoebe Boswell che si dispiega come un’offerta sonora intergenerazionale una conversazione che si conduce attraverso il tempo, la memoria e l’improvvisazione. In quest’opera intima, in cui tre persone: il virtuoso pianista jazz Pat Thomas, un vivace bambino di cinque anni e Boswell stessa, si riuniscono al pianoforte, guidati dalla musica che l’artista ha composto durante gli anni dell’adolescenza per accompagnare un brano di consigli poetici della nonna sul viaggio della vita e della morte. Presentato come prima proposta del programma per il 120° anniversario a Villa Romana, che quest’anno è guidato dal tema del Plurifonica, A Sancturay of Trees dà il via a un’esplorazione lunga un anno di voci stratificate, risonanze e l’atto condiviso dell’ascolto. L’installazione si sviluppa come una meditazione sull’eredità e la traduzione, su ciò che viene tramandato e ciò che viene reinterpretato. Attraverso il gesto di suonare, ogni artista abita uno spazio tra la memoria e l’improvvisazione, tra la chiamata e la risposta.

Phoebe Boswell’s A Sanctuary of Trees is a video triptych that unfolds as an intergenerational sonic offering - a conversation held through time, memory, and improvisation. In this intimate work, in which three people, virtuoso jazz pianist Pat Thomas, a spirited five-year-old, and Boswell herself come together at the piano, guided by music the artist composed in her teenage years to accompany a passage of poetic advice from her grandmother about the journey of life and death. Activated as the first offering in Villa Romana’s 120th anniversary programme, which this year is guided by the theme of Plurifonica, A Sanctuary of Trees sets the tone for a year-long exploration of layered voices, resonances, and the shared act of listening. The installation unfolds as a meditation on inheritance and translation, on what is passed down and what is reinterpreted. Through the gesture of playing, each performer inhabits a space between memory and improvisation, calling and response.

Nella prima metà del XVIII secolo, uomini e donne africani ridotti in schiavitù nelle piantagioni o nelle città intorno all'Atlantico crearono pacchetti protettivi che difendevano loro e i loro clienti dalla vulnerabilità fisica, sociale e spirituale. Questi pacchetti, sebbene oggi poco noti, hanno profondamente plasmato la natura del potere e le modalità del suo esercizio nel mondo atlantico fin dall'era dell'Illuminismo. Le tracce rimaste di questi pacchetti negli archivi sono deboli, frammentate e rovinate dalla violenza che le autorità religiose e civili europee esercitarono instancabilmente contro di loro e i loro creatori. Propongo di esplorare e riflettere insieme nel nostro workshop sulle possibilità che la ricerca storica e la creazione artistica ci offrono per recuperare questi oggetti.

In the first half of the eighteenth century, African men and women enslaved in plantations or cities around the Atlantic created empowered packets that protected them and their clients against physical, social, and spiritual vulnerability. These packets, though little known today, have deeply shaped the nature of power and the modes of its practice in the Atlantic world since the era of the Enlightenment. The traces left of them in the archives are faint, fragmented, and marred by the violence that European religious and civil authorities tirelessly wielded against them and their makers. I propose that we explore and reflect together in our workshop the possibilities that historical research and artistic creation afford us to recover these objects.

Il dialogo si basa sulle sperimentazioni di Pesarini, in ascolto del museo e in ascolto della risposta del proprio corpo. ENG: Scholar Angelica Pesarini shares an intimate reflection on coloniality in relation to the spaces and collections of museums speaking to efforts and initiatives onwards decolonizing and their implications on racialized embodied experiences. The dialogue draws upon Pesarini’s experimentations with listening to the museum and her own body's response to it. Reflecting upon nearly a decade of interfacing with Black History Month Florence, the conversation is a meditation on her ongoing work in dialogue with museums and the intersections between art and ethnography in relation to Italian colonial history.

How can artistic and academic practices contribute to dismantling colonial legacies and reimagining narratives rooted in exclusion and silence? This event, “‘Decolonial’ Practice in Art and Our ‘Decolonial’ Appointment in Research”, brings artists and scholars together to converse about the transformative potential of decolonial methodologies in art and research. Through exploring creative and intellectual approaches, the speakers will examine the intersections of memory, archives, and cultural expression as spaces of resistance, healing, and reparation. The discussion will move beyond conventional frameworks, interrogating how Italian colonial history continues to shape the present. By weaving together diverse perspectives, the event aims to shed light on the interplay between personal and collective memory, historical omissions, and the role of artistic and academic labour in challenging entrenched power structures. Attendees will gain insights into the ongoing processes of confronting the past and imagining new futures.

This event has been co-organized by Black History Month at the European University Institute (BHM at EUI), Black History Month Florence (BHMF), and Black History Month Milan (BHMM).

Cose Bizzarre is an exhibition that as a whole exposes how visions and representations of people and places as radically “other” than ourselves depend mostly on power relations that are often difficult to break or reverse.

Jermay Michael Gabriel reminds us through his works, and through his approach to artistic research, of the fatigue involved in reversing the gaze from the margins, as the power relations that can constituted them can seem ultimately indelible. We can thus still aspire to a critical understanding of these power relations and our role within them. Jermay Michael Gabriel stimulates and instigates this precious understanding by actively and materially intervening in the visual paradigms that, though created in the past, continue to fuel dominant ideologies in the present.

The exhibition is the 15th edition of Di Palo in Frasca, a research platform dedicated to exhibiting practices in relation to artistic research. Launched in 2020 on the occasion of the exhibition dedicated by the Museo Novecento to Allan Kaprow - father of the Happening and of a new idea of participation between work, space and audience - MATCH pays tribute this year to another great 20th-century artist, Louise Bourgeois, who will be exhibited in 2024 at the Museo Novecento. This year's MATCH festival is conceived as a journey through powerful and ambiguous figures that enchant, transform, mutate and unite. They are witches, sirens and sisters.
