Nella prima metà del XVIII secolo, uomini e donne africani ridotti in schiavitù nelle piantagioni o nelle città intorno all'Atlantico crearono pacchetti protettivi che difendevano loro e i loro clienti dalla vulnerabilità fisica, sociale e spirituale. Questi pacchetti, sebbene oggi poco noti, hanno profondamente plasmato la natura del potere e le modalità del suo esercizio nel mondo atlantico fin dall'era dell'Illuminismo. Le tracce rimaste di questi pacchetti negli archivi sono deboli, frammentate e rovinate dalla violenza che le autorità religiose e civili europee esercitarono instancabilmente contro di loro e i loro creatori. Propongo di esplorare e riflettere insieme nel nostro workshop sulle possibilità che la ricerca storica e la creazione artistica ci offrono per recuperare questi oggetti.

In the first half of the eighteenth century, African men and women enslaved in plantations or cities around the Atlantic created empowered packets that protected them and their clients against physical, social, and spiritual vulnerability. These packets, though little known today, have deeply shaped the nature of power and the modes of its practice in the Atlantic world since the era of the Enlightenment. The traces left of them in the archives are faint, fragmented, and marred by the violence that European religious and civil authorities tirelessly wielded against them and their makers. I propose that we explore and reflect together in our workshop the possibilities that historical research and artistic creation afford us to recover these objects.
