A Sanctuary of Trees è un video trittico di Phoebe Boswell che si dispiega come un’offerta sonora intergenerazionale una conversazione che si conduce attraverso il tempo, la memoria e l’improvvisazione. In quest’opera intima, in cui tre persone: il virtuoso pianista jazz Pat Thomas, un vivace bambino di cinque anni e Boswell stessa, si riuniscono al pianoforte, guidati dalla musica che l’artista ha composto durante gli anni dell’adolescenza per accompagnare un brano di consigli poetici della nonna sul viaggio della vita e della morte. Presentato come prima proposta del programma per il 120° anniversario a Villa Romana, che quest’anno è guidato dal tema del Plurifonica, A Sancturay of Trees dà il via a un’esplorazione lunga un anno di voci stratificate, risonanze e l’atto condiviso dell’ascolto. L’installazione si sviluppa come una meditazione sull’eredità e la traduzione, su ciò che viene tramandato e ciò che viene reinterpretato. Attraverso il gesto di suonare, ogni artista abita uno spazio tra la memoria e l’improvvisazione, tra la chiamata e la risposta.

Phoebe Boswell’s A Sanctuary of Trees is a video triptych that unfolds as an intergenerational sonic offering - a conversation held through time, memory, and improvisation. In this intimate work, in which three people, virtuoso jazz pianist Pat Thomas, a spirited five-year-old, and Boswell herself come together at the piano, guided by music the artist composed in her teenage years to accompany a passage of poetic advice from her grandmother about the journey of life and death. Activated as the first offering in Villa Romana’s 120th anniversary programme, which this year is guided by the theme of Plurifonica, A Sanctuary of Trees sets the tone for a year-long exploration of layered voices, resonances, and the shared act of listening. The installation unfolds as a meditation on inheritance and translation, on what is passed down and what is reinterpreted. Through the gesture of playing, each performer inhabits a space between memory and improvisation, calling and response.
